Brisbane - sister city

Background

The Auckland-Brisbane sister city agreement was signed in 1988, to coincide with the World Expo in Brisbane. Auckland has enjoyed a very active relationship with Brisbane including tourism, sport and best practice initiatives with a view to increase mutual economic benefits in business and tourism.

Twentieth anniversary of the sister city relationship with Brisbane

October 2008 and April 2009

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the sister city relationship between Auckland and Brisbane.

The relationship was formalised during World Expo in Brisbane in 1988, and originally focussed on sporting, educational and tourism programmes.  More recently, initiatives with economic benefit or best practice outcomes are being implemented between the cities.

Tourism also remains a focus for the relationship, with the 20th anniversary being celebrated with tourism promotions in each other's cities in October 2008 (Brisbane in Auckland) and April 2009 (Auckland in Brisbane).
