BackgroundThe Auckland-Fukuoka sister city agreement was signed in 1986, following a sister port relationship between Hakata Port and Ports of Auckland, signed in 1979. Auckland has enjoyed a very active relationship with Fukuoka including a wide variety of tourism, education, youth, cultural and community initiatives. Some examples of programmesAsian-Pacific Children's Convention (APCC)Every year Fukuoka invites youth ambassadors to participate in the convention, which aims to foster multi-cultural understanding and develop global citizens. The APCC also operate an annual outbound exchange, with Auckland as one of the host cities (Mission Project). Asian-Pacific City SummitAsia-Pacific city leaders meet every two years to share their views and experiences regarding urban administration and important issues facing the region.
