Background

The Auckland-Tomioka friendship city agreement was originally signed in 1983, between One Tree Hill Borough and Tomioka town. Auckland City Council inherited the relationship in 1989 following local government amalgamation. Auckland's relationship with Tomioka has included education and cultural initiatives.

For information about Tomioka, visit the official website of Tomioka Town (limited English content).

Some examples of programmes

Tomioka teacher

Every year, the Tomioka Board of Education employ an Assistant English Teacher (AET) to work at primary and secondary schools in Tomioka. The position is reserved for an Aucklander, who is recruited through the JET programme.

Youth exchange

Every two years, Penrose High School, Penrose Rotary and Tomioka Rotary arrange for students to spend one month home staying and attending school in each other's city/town.

Tomioka 25th anniversary
End of November visit

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the friendship city relationship between Auckland and Tomioka, a Japanese town 2 hours north of Tokyo. The link with Tomioka was originally signed by One Tree Hill Borough Council prior to local government amalgamation, and has focused on education programmes and Rotary Club links with the Maungakiekie area. The mayor of Tomioka, Mr Katsuya Endo, will lead an official delegation to Auckland at the end of November to celebrate the anniversary.
