Mt Albert cycling and walking

Mt Albert is one of a number of areas where the council is making walking and cycling infrastructure improvements.

The improvements to pedestrian and cyclist routes in Mt Albert include intersection upgrades, safe cycle lanes in key areas and cycle parking around the Mt Albert town centre.

Some key initiatives are:

Cycle lanes on Mt Albert and Carrington roads - creating a safe cycleway along this main arterial road

Be Active in Mt Albert - a guide to walking and cycling routes.

Mt Albert and Carrington roads cycle lanes

As part of a package of pedestrian and cycle safety improvements for the Mt Albert area, Auckland City Council is introducing cycle lanes along parts of Mt Albert and Carrington roads in November 2007.

The work to create the Mt Albert cycle lanes is part of a citywide strategy to improve pedestrian and cycle safety and enable more people to walk and cycle.

Planned construction timetable

Cycle lanes will be created in each direction between New North and Sandringham roads and the existing cycle lanes on a section of Carrington Road will be widened.

The limited width of the carriageway means that to achieve safe cycle lanes, car lanes in both directions will have to be slightly narrowed and some parking removed from the northbound side of the road.

Auckland City Council consulted with residents in mid-2006 and nearly 250 people took the time to have their say.

While a number of people opposed the removal of parking along one side of the road, the majority expressed support for cycle lanes in general.

The project team considered the feedback and revised the design where possible, which was endorsed by the Eden/Albert Community Board. The council's Transport and Urban Linkages Committee gave final approval to the cycle lanes in December 2006.

The cycling improvements include:

  • The installation of a 1.4m cycle lane along the route, (1.8m where adjacent to existing car parking).
  • The removal of some parking and the introduction of no stopping lines along the northern side of Mt Albert Road, between New North and Sandringham roads.
  • Four additional pedestrian refuge islands to assist with safer crossing points along the route

Be Active in Mt Albert

The Be Active in Mt Albert map has nine walking and cycling routes for local destinations and scenic locations around Mt Albert.

It details distance, average time, number of calories burnt and number of steps taken as well as offering general fitness information and tips to get active.

The aim of the brochure is to encourage Aucklanders to leave their car at home for short trips, while also helping people stay fit and healthy.

Be Active maps are available for Mt Albert, Newmarket, Onehunga, Ellerslie, Avondale, Panmure and Otahuhu.

The initiative has been endorsed by SPARC (Sport and Recreation New Zealand), the National Heart Foundation, and pedestrian advocacy group Walk Auckland.
