TopCreating a citywide cycle network

We are working towards creating a citywide cycle network that allows cyclists to safely and easily travel to their chosen destination. Below is a summary of complete, current and future Auckland City cycleway projects that contribute to achieving this goal.

Name of strategic cycle link

Description

Carrington Road

On road cycle lanes between Great North Road and New North Road. Total length - 1070m.

North-western cycleway

Off road cycleway between Te Atatu Road and St Lukes Road, between St Lukes Road along Sutherland Road signposted route, east of Sutherland Road off road cycle way to Levonia Street, along Levonia Street and Fourth Ave sign posted route, east of Fourth Ave off road cycle way to Ian McKinnon Drive/Queen Street intersection. The off road path runs along the southern side of the motorway. Total length - 10,175m.

Tamaki Drive

Shared pedestrian/cyclist off road path. Total length approx 6km.

Greenlane East

Shared pedestrian/cyclist off road path. Total length - 1453m.

Greenlane West

Shared pedestrian/cyclist off road path between the motorway interchange and Wheturangi Road. Total length approx 800m. Also on-road cycle lanes between Pohutukawa Drive and Manukau Road.

Quay Street

Shared pedestrian/cyclist off road path from Tinley Street to western end of Quay Street. Total length - 1906m.

Waikaraka cycleway

Pikes Point (Hugo Jonston Drive) in Onehunga to Onehunga Harbour Road (old Mangere bridge)

  • Pikes Point. Widening of existing pedestrian path and installation of signage to convert to shared facility - approx. 4 km.

South Eastern Arterial

Off road path along the southern side of South Eastern Highway (Mt Wellington). Total length - approx 1km.

Westhaven Drive

Shared pedestrian/cyclist off road path along seaward side.

Quay Street

Shared pedestrian/cyclist off road path on seaward side, between the Viaduct Harbour and Tamaki Drive.

Great North Road

Shared pedestrian/cyclist off road path on eastern side between the North-western cycleway and Fir Street.

Symonds Street

Shared pedestrian/cyclist off road path between Alex Evens Drive and Karangahape Road, on the western side.

St Lukes Road

On road cycle lanes in both directions, between the North-western cycleway and New North Road.

New North Road

Both on-road and off-road facility, north side under Dominion Road flyover.

Ian McKinnon Drive

Shared pedestrian/cyclist off road path on east side between Upper Queen St and Minnie St

Uphill cycle lane between Pitt Street and Cook Street.

Due for implementation late 2007

Stanley St/Grafton Road

Shared pedestrian/cyclist off road path on eastern side between Park Road and Beach Road.

Due for consultation late 2007

Wellesley Street

Shared pedestrian/cyclist off road path from Grafton Road to Princes Street and on road cycle lane from Princes Street to Mayoral Drive.

Due for consultation early 2008

Ian McKinnon Drive

On road and off road cycle lanes, both sides on all ramps around Dominion Road flyover, Upper Queen Street and Alex Evans Drive.

Due for consultation late 2007

Greenlane West

On road cycle lanes, both sides from Pohutukawa Drive to Wheturangi Road.

Due for implementation late 2007

Waikaraka cycleway
  • Onehunga Harbour Creation of a link along Onehunga Harbour Drive, Orpheus Drive and State Highway 20 to cross SH20 and link Mt Roskill section at Hillsborough Road. Total length - approx. 4km.
  • Mt Roskill. Creation of an off road link parallel to the new State Highway 20 (SH 20) motorway through Keith Hay Park, Winstone Park (Mt Roskill) linking to Richardson Road. Total length - approx 4km. Design completed.
