Stage one of the cycleway is open to the public and can be used, but there is still a few metres leading up the Mangere Bridge that still need to be completed. The Waikaraka cycleway will run from Pikes Point in Onehunga to Hillsborough Road in Mt Roskill, connecting with Transit New Zealand's State Highway 20 (SH20) Mt Roskill extension. The Waikaraka cycleway is part of the council's package of sustainable transport solutions, and aims to make cycling a better, safer and more attractive travel choice. The cycleway has been designed to give existing cyclists a safe alternative to major roads, and ultimately make cycling more attractive to potential cyclists. It will also encourage more people to enjoy and access the Mt Roskill volcanic cone. The name, Waikaraka, came out of consultation with iwi and reflects the proximity to water (wai) and the karaka tree. The name is currently used for the park by Pikes Point and reflects the abundance of karaka tree once found in the area. ConstructionConstruction on sections one and two, taking in Pikes Point and Onehunga, started in June 2006.
