Waikaraka cycleway

Work is almost complete on the first section of the Waikaraka cycleway, one of the main cycleways to be built as part of Auckland City Council's cycling and walking strategy.

Stage one of the cycleway is open to the public and can be used, but there is still a few metres leading up the Mangere Bridge that still need to be completed.

The Waikaraka cycleway will run from Pikes Point in Onehunga to Hillsborough Road in Mt Roskill, connecting with Transit New Zealand's State Highway 20 (SH20) Mt Roskill extension.

The Waikaraka cycleway is part of the council's package of sustainable transport solutions, and aims to make cycling a better, safer and more attractive travel choice.

The cycleway has been designed to give existing cyclists a safe alternative to major roads, and ultimately make cycling more attractive to potential cyclists. It will also encourage more people to enjoy and access the Mt Roskill volcanic cone.

The name, Waikaraka, came out of consultation with iwi and reflects the proximity to water (wai) and the karaka tree. The name is currently used for the park by Pikes Point and reflects the abundance of karaka tree once found in the area.

Construction

Construction on sections one and two, taking in Pikes Point and Onehunga, started in June 2006.

  • Section one: June 2006 to July 2007: Hugo Johnson Drive to Mangere Bridge
    • work in this area is widening and upgrading the existing footpath and board walk to develop an off-road shared cycle and pedestrian path
    • Part of the initial work involved temporarily closing the existing shared pedestrian and cyclist pathway to do safety improvements to remove historical asbestos. This remediation work is now completed.
    • construction value is $2.3 million.
  • Section two: Mangere Bridge to Hillsborough Road, through Onehunga
    • this section is mostly on-road and includes introducing cycle advance stop boxes at key intersections, directional signs and new road marking
    • construction value is $1 million.
  • Section three: Queenstown Road to Richardson Road
    • a 365m long section of the 12km cycleway is proposed to pass through Winstone Park, on the north side of Mt Roskill
    • this final section is being designed to link in with Transit New Zealand's State Highway 20 Mt Roskill extension.
