Fanshawe Street widening projectAuckland City began work on widening Fanshawe Street to extend the bus lanes along this key transport route in March 2005 and completed the project in May 2006. Project backgroundDevelopment of the Northern Busway is well underway, seeing additional bus services between the North Shore and Auckland's CBD. The new busway will provide quicker and more reliable bus services including those services that link the North Shore with Auckland City's CBD. Fanshawe Street is a significant section of the busway route, linking the northern motorway to the CBD. To assist in the busway's success, Auckland City has:
ProgrammeTo reduce disruption to properties and users of Fanshawe Street, the project was split into three distinct contracts. A brief description of each contract is below. Contract 1: Contract 1 addressed the relocation of existing underground utility services from under the footpath into a new service trench. The service trench accommodates most utilities, including gas, power and telecommunications. This piece of work started in March 2005 and was completed in June 2005. The work was undertaken outside of peak hours to minimise disruption. Contract 2: The road widening work was completed under Contract 2. The footpath, median improvements, pedestrian crossings and bus stop work was all completed within this contract. This work began in October 2005 and was completed in April 2006. Contract 3: In the final contract, the length of Fanshawe Street was resealed, making it a smoother, safer ride. As part of this contract, some traffic movements became restricted and permanently banned. For example, the right hand turn from Fanshawe Street into Beaumont Street was permanently banned from April 7 2006. Access to Westhaven and the surrounding area is via Daldy or Halsey Streets. This contract began in January 2006 and was completed in May 2006. The $12 million project to widen, resurface and extend bus lanes along Fanshawe Street means a quicker, smoother ride for bus users as well as motorists. Twenty-four hour bus lanes in both directions improve bus travel times between the North Shore and Auckland City's CBD, and help encourage people to choose public transport over the private car. For those who opt for their car, traffic lanes have been maintained at full capacity with two lanes in each direction. With wider footpaths, staggered crossings and mid-road pedestrian refuge areas, pedestrians have also benefited from this important project. Maps of Fanshawe Street
