Remuera Road bus lanes proposal

Background | Benefits of the proposalProposed route | Detailed plans | What happens next?

Background

Auckland City Council is proposing to introduce peak time bus lanes along some sections of Remuera Road to improve bus services along this popular route.

This route has strategic importance in the Auckland city network, connecting the eastern suburbs with Newmarket and the CBD. Remuera Road is also one of the Auckland Regional Transport Authority's  quality transit network routes which aim to provide fast, high frequency and high quality bus services with extensive bus priority measures, modern bus shelters and branded services.

More information on the proposal

Operational times of bus lanes

The citybound lane would run from 7am to 9am while the outbound lane would run from 4pm to 6pm.

Who else could use the bus lanes?

Cyclists, motorcyclists and emergency vehicles will be able to use the bus lanes during operating times.

Parking spaces along the route

The majority of the proposed bus lanes make use of existing peak time clearways so parking would not be affected in those areas.

Effects on journey time on other vehicles

The proposed bus lanes have been designed to minimise the effects on journey times of other vehicles. Traffic modelling has shown that there is very little change to the overall journey time. Although there may be longer queues in some areas these will be offset by more efficient intersections along the proposed route.

In addition:

  • no bus lanes are proposed around Remuera's shopping centre
  • the proposed bus lanes have been designed to avoid many of the main intersections and side streets
  • capacity will be maintained at key intersections.

Road layout in proposed areas

At some intersections, lane usage may change, for example to make kerbside lanes left turn only, except for buses. Where a bus lane crosses a side street or driveway, motorists may drive in the bus way for up to 50m when turning in or out.

The proposal includes a road safety investigation into new traffic signals at the intersection of Market Road and Remuera Road and a potential kerb extension and left turn restriction at Broadway as part of the streetscape upgrade and other traffic  network changes in that area. Any additional work would be coordinated to minimise disruption to users.

Changes to the footpath

The proposal includes bus stop build-outs at the Remuera Road shopping centre to help buses in reaching the kerb. This will increase the width of the footpath, deter illegal parking and provide better safety for passengers.
