Annual Plan 2008/2009Overview | Your rates in action | Paying your rates | Projects | Full documentOverviewCreating an affordable AucklandAuckland City Council is working hard to improve the things that make a real difference to your city and your quality of life. In June the council approved its annual plan for the 2008/2009 year. This includes about $400 million of investment in significant projects across the city while holding the average rates increase to 5.1 per cent, the council's rate of inflation. This will mean a rise of $78 for every residential property outside the CBD.
An essential element of a successful city is for its people to be able to move around easily. Auckland city needs a reliable transport network with a range of choices, including efficient and effective public transport, better quality roads, and improved cycling and walking facilities. We are working on many transport initiatives including:
Work is well under way to transform the CBD into one of the world's most dynamic business and cultural centres. In 2008/2009 this work will continue, including an upgrade of St Patrick's Square and Albert Park. These projects are part of our long-term plan to transform key streets and open spaces in the CBD to help create an even better city. In 2008/2009 we will continue opening up the waterfront to the public with the start of the redevelopment of Wynyard Quarter. We will be upgrading Aotea Square, strengthening the Civic car park roof and replacing the Aotea Centre's outdoor steps. This year, one of our most beautiful historic buildings, the Auckland Art Gallery, will undergo a multi-million dollar transformation. This will increase its size (giving 50 per cent more space for exhibitions) and create better linkages with Albert Park. In 2008/2009 we will continue to create community-focused town centres with further development in Panmure, preparation for work on the new swimming pool at the Otahuhu recreational precinct and improvements to Keith Hay Park in Mount Roskill, which aim to create a focal point for the community. We are committed to reducing the environmental impact we all have on our city. Recycling will become easier for Auckland city residents this year with new and enhanced recycling services. New 240-litre bins, designed to hold all recyclable household waste, will be collected fortnightly and taken to the most technologically advanced recycling centre in the southern hemisphere. We are also spending an extra $465,000 to improve the street cleanliness of our major commercial centres. Additional funding has been allocated to tackle graffiti vandalism. On top of the $1.9 million the council currently spends on eradicating graffiti vandalism, we will be providing an additional $200,000 every year to go towards enhanced enforcement and improved methods for collecting information about suspects.
