2007 Local Body Elections

Campaign poster: Your city. Your view counts. Post your vote by 11 October.Triennial elections for elected members of all local bodies throughout New Zealand were conducted by postal vote, on Saturday 13 October 2007.

The elections were conducted under the provisions of the new Local Electoral Act 2001, the Local Electoral Regulations 2001, and the Local Government Act 2002.


Positions

Elections were held for the following positions:

  • mayor
  • councillors (between one and four councillors depending on ward, but totalling 19 altogether)
  • community board members (between five and six members depending on community, but totalling 52 altogether)
  • Auckland Regional Council members (four regional councillors for the Auckland constituency, with a total of 13 region-wide)
  • Auckland District Health Board members (seven members elected 'at large')
  • Portage Licensing Trust members (three members for Avondale, Blockhouse Bay and part Mt Albert electors only)
  • Mt Wellington Licensing Trust members (six members for Mt Wellington electors only).


How to enrol

To vote and stand in elections you need to be registered on the electoral roll.

You can register or check your enrolment details by:

  • completing the appropriate form at any Post Shop
  • telephoning 0800 ENROLNOW (0800 367 656)
  • visiting the Electoral Enrolment Centre website on www.elections.org.nz.

Those eligible to vote at the elections are all resident electors and non-resident ratepayer electors whose names appear on the electoral rolls when they close.

Resident roll

All parliamentary electors are automatically enrolled on the local body residential electoral roll at the address where they live.

Any changes to the resident roll (address details, postal details, etc) should be made by:

  • completing the appropriate form at any Post Shop
  • telephoning 0800 ENROLNOW (0800 367 656)
  • accessing the Electoral Enrolment Centre website on www.elections.org.nz.

Ratepayer roll

If a person is on the parliamentary roll in one area and pays rates on a property in another area, they may be eligible to be enrolled on the non-resident ratepayer roll. A firm, company, corporation or society paying rates on a property, may nominate one of its members or officers as a ratepayer elector (providing the nominated person resides outside of the area). Any changes to the ratepayer roll should be made at the council's electoral office.

Electoral system

The First Past the Post electoral system will be used for all elections except for the Auckland District Health Board election which will use the Single Transferable Voting electoral system.


Voting

Voting was conducted by postal vote.

Voting documents were sent to all eligible electors by post from Friday 21 September 2007.

The voting period was the three weeks (Friday 21 September to noon, Saturday 13 October 2007).


Auckland District Health Board elections

The STV (Single Transferable Voting) electoral system was used for the Auckland DHB issue which Auckland City Council is required to conduct on behalf of the ADHB. You can find further information on this subject by clicking on the following links:
