New look for Newmarket

The first stage of Auckland City Council's upgrade of Broadway was completed Friday, 30 November. Street improvements outside Westfield 277 Newmarket and the Olympic swimming pool include new footpaths, seats, planting and lighting. The next stage will start in January, with the final stage due to finish by August 2008.

Starting on 13 August 2007, Auckland City Council began upgrading Broadway, between the Railway Street roundabout and Mortimer Pass, to provide Newmarket with a sophisticated look to match its position as a premier retail and entertainment hub.

The $6 million new look is in keeping with recently revamped Nuffield Street and includes:

  • upgraded footpaths of natural New Zealand stone that will provide safer and easier access for those getting around by foot
  • high-quality street accessories such as bins, seating and low stone walls that are functional, hard-wearing and stylish
  • improved landscaping including magnolia and cabbage trees to create more attractive 'stop and pause' areas
  • new street lighting to enhance the area
  • reduced clutter along Broadway
  • a consistent look and feel for the Newmarket retail area

The key objective of the project is to provide safer footpaths for pedestrians.

The project team has developed a construction plan that aims to minimise disruption as much as possible.

Work that is likely to be dusty or noisy will take place in the evening, after standard business hours. Additionally, all traffic lanes will remain open during the day, with closures to the kerb-side traffic lane taking place at night time.

Work will stop over the busy Christmas shopping period, between 1 December 2007 and 7 January 2008.

The council will keep people well informed throughout the 12-month construction with clear signage, newsletters, print advertising, an on-site contractor project ambassador and council ambassador.

Final design

The project team worked alongside the community and businesses to create a final design for Newmarket that suits the area's special character while delivering better pedestrian access and improved safety.

During public consultation, which was carried out in December 2006, respondents opted for footpaths of Timaru bluestone, chosen for its volcanic character and because it is a New Zealand material.

At the 26 July council meeting, the council approved the tender by construction company P and M Paving Ltd to deliver the project.
