The LandingOverview | Vision and goals | The upgrade OverviewThe Landing is a three-hectare triangle of land overlooking a beautiful stretch of water at Okahu bay. This land was reclaimed from the sea off the tip of Pokanoa Point in the 1930s, and was originally named Easthaven. Auckland City purchased the site in 1996, and is now upgrading and enhancing this area for community, recreation and marine use and enjoyment. The project also aims to open up public access to the waterfront along Tamaki Drive for recreational users. The Landing presently features a boat ramp, boat repair yard, clubrooms, boat storage and vehicle parking and caters to all kinds of watercraft from kayaks, waka to catamarans. It is the home of the Royal Akarana Yacht Club (RAYC), formed in 1895 - one of the world's few yacht clubs granted the right to use 'royal' in its name because of its training role for navy officers during World War II. Other residents are the Auckland Sailing Club, Auckland Coastguard, the New Zealand Multihull Yacht Club, Orakei watersports, Waterwise, Ferg's Kayaks and the Auckland Canoe Club. A concept plan was developed in 2005 to upgrade the area, and the plan was refined following public consultation. The council's Arts, Culture and Recreation Committee endorsed a revised concept plan on 7 December 2005. As part of Auckland City's negotiations with the developers of the nearby Orakei Marina, access fees paid to the council will be put towards any redevelopment costs.
