Te Wero Bridge

Picture of Auckland's waterfront. We challenged creative members of the public and engineering and architectural firms worldwide, to shape an enduring landmark on an outstanding New Zealand waterfront location.

Find out who won the competition

It will carry cyclists, pedestrians and passenger transport - including the potential for light rail.

To maintain existing boat access it must also open and close as quickly and quietly as possible for boats accessing the inner Viaduct Harbour.

Westhaven marina

Cyclists near the Harbour Bridge. We are working to create an overall concept plan for the Westhaven area.

This concept plan will guide future proposals for buildings, public outdoor areas, and activities on land and the water.

Wynyard Point

Picture of Auckland's waterfront.Wynyard Point, also known as the tank farm, is a large-scale (35 hectare) reclaimed area close to the central business district and surrounded by water.

As leases currently held by the bulk liquids industry and other activities expire over the next 20 years, there is potential to redevelop the land for residential and commercial purposes and enable the marine and fishing industries to keep operating.

Policies and plan changes

Auckland waterfront 2040

Picture of Auckland's waterfront by night. This vision provides a framework that sits above the detailed planning for specific areas of the future development of the waterfront.

It has been published after consultation with a wide range of stakeholders in the area and with residents and ratepayers of Auckland.

Creating a world class waterfront

Aerial picture of Auckland's waterfront. Our waterfront has the potential to be a beautiful destination that is rich in public open spaces and activities, supports commercially successful and innovative businesses and celebrates the city's sea-faring culture.

Auckland City Council is helping to realise the vision for the entire waterfront by securing key pieces of land for the city. This is part of creating high-quality public spaces for locals and visitors in the future.

Development with vision - council's property role

Picture of a family at Auckland's waterfront. This city is unique. Auckland City has a vision of an attractive, exciting city, with vibrant local communities and a people-focused, energetic city centre. The council's vision for the CBD is to revitalise Auckland's CBD into one of the world's most vibrant and dynamic business and cultural centres.

Because of the council's concerns that an increasing amount of development in the city is not achieving this vision, in May 2004 it consulted on and subsequently adopted a new policy called Development with Vision.

Wynyard Quarter plan change hearings - Plan changes 4 and 16 to 26

Read the submissions

Picture of petrol tanks at Auckland's waterfront. We have proposed a district plan change for the 36ha Wynyard Quarter formerly known as the "tank farm" or "western reclamation".

Last year, the public gave us their feedback.

Independent commissioners heard concerns and interests of the submitters at a public hearing. They will now consider all the submissions and report their recommendations to the council.

This change will enable:

  • the area to be developed into parks, plazas, boulevards, boardwalks, shops, cafes, offices and apartments
  • the creation of new spaces and facilities for events, festivals and markets
  • the fishing and marine industries to retain a home in part of the area

These district plan changes correspond with the Auckland Regional Council's coastal plan change for the harbour area surrounding Wynyard Quarter.

Draft CBD waterfront masterplan

Picture of Auckland's waterfront.Auckland's CBD waterfront is one of our greatest assets. Auckland City Council's draft CBD waterfront masterplan is the next step in maximising the area's appeal as part of developing a world class city we can all be proud of.

This masterplan is a creative overview. It gives definition to the Auckland Waterfront Vision 2040 and sets out design priorities and recommendations to guide the future development of the CBD waterfront.
