Western Springs outer sportsfields

Auckland City Council is planning to sand carpet the Western Springs outer sportsfields over the next two years to provide a better quality, year-round playing surface that can also be used for parking over summer. In preparation for this project, the council will be installing new stormwater drainage as well as upgrading Stadium Road.

Stormwater drainage

The installation of stormwater drainage will begin on Tuesday, 3 June 2008 and is expected to take eight weeks. Work hours are 7am to 5pm weekdays. A section of the footpath linking the Bullock Track to Western Springs Park will be closed for the majority of the works, however access will be available over the playing fields.

Upgrade of Stadium Road

An upgrade of Stadium Road is planned to start on Monday, 9 June 2008 and is expected to take six weeks, weather dependent. The improvements will allow pedestrians to move more safely to and from the playing fields, stadium and Western Springs Park. Work hours are from 7am to 6pm Monday to Saturday. The works will be staged so that pedestrian and vehicle access is maintained at all times.

Sand carpeting of the sportsfields

The council is planning to sand carpet the sports fields at Western Springs outer sportsfields over the next two summers (2008/2009 and 2009/2010).

The sand carpeting will be designed to take the weight of light motor vehicles, so that the fields can be used for both parking and sport over summer. Parking will not be permitted in winter.

The work is being staged over two years so that half of the fields are always open for the public to use. Work on the first half of the fields is expected to start in early November 2008. More information will be available closer to the time.
