Opening a food premises
Any premises used for the manufacture, preparation or storage of food for
sale must be registered with Auckland City including restaurants and cafes,
bakeries, dairies, grocers, supermarkets etc. You cannot open your food premises to the public unless you are
registered.
All food for sale in your premises must also be made on a registered premises.
Food cannot be produced in the home kitchen for sale.
The first step
If you are thinking about setting up a restaurant or cafe there are a number of
steps you will need to consider including:
- location (District Plan zoning)
- car parking
- liquor licensing
- health licensing
- building issues eg. disabled access, fire safety
You can contact us to find out if you
are allowed to set up a food premises in your chosen area. We will advise you
whether there are any parking or other planning requirements for the area
including lighting, noise and air extraction which may affect neighbouring
premises.
If you intend to operate as a wholesale outlet or food manufacturer you will
also need to contact a Health Protection Officer at Auckland Healthcare, Phone:
262 1855. They will advise you about labelling, ingredients and preservative
requirements.
