Where have the books come from?

The medieval books in this exhibition are all part of the collections of Auckland City Libraries. They have been among the best-loved treasures of the Library from the beginning of the Library’s history.

Many of them come from the founding collection of Governor Sir George Grey who gave his collection to the people of Auckland in 1882. He purchased them from dealers in England, both on personal visits and through catalogues.

The other major benefactor of medieval books was Henry Shaw, an Auckland accountant, who donated books and manuscripts in the early part of the 20th century.

These major donations have attracted other gifts since then, and the Library continues to welcome and value contributions to its Special Collections.
