The famous Pink and White Terraces, which were a major tourist attraction until their destruction by the eruption of Mount Tarawera in 1886, were undoubtedly one of highlights of Hochstetter’s visit to this area. The map is the first published geological map and serves as an important historical record of the area prior to the eruption.
