The Leys Institute

The Leys institute was opened by the mayor of Auckland, the Hon. E. Mitchelson on the 29th March 1905.
Designed by Mr. R.W. Watt the building was described as “rather imposing in appearance, being of brick with a cement face. The style of the architecture is the beautiful renaissance.”
The Lending Library contained 3000 volumes.

The Reading Room facilities were free but silence was expected, a sign warned of a 5 pound fine if this was not adhered to.

Rules of borrowing were pasted on the front of each book.

Fines for overdue books were 1 penny per day.
