Several initiatives are under way to give buses priority over other traffic on main roads into the CBD, resulting in faster and more reliable journey times for bus passengers. These include introducing an afternoon peak bus lane on Ian McKinnon Drive (between Horipoto Street and View Road) to enable quicker bus trips out of the CBD to connect with bus lanes operating on Dominion Road.

On Mt Eden Road, the council proposes extending existing morning peak bus lanes and adding an extra one.

Bus lanes on Symonds Street (between Mt Eden Road and Mount Street), will give buses and cyclists priority at peak times.

The council is also proposing to introduce bus lanes along some sections of Remuera Road and St Johns Road, and evening peak-time bus lanes in the southbound direction along Great South Road, between Broadway and Green Lane West.

The Central Connector, a new busway under construction will provide more efficient travel between the CBD and Newmarket.
