Memorial service for tsunami victims

A National Memorial Service to commemorate those who lost their lives in the recent tsunami tragedy in Samoa is being held on Sunday, 8 November at 4pm at the Auckland Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in Parnell.

Up to 2000 people are expected and the service, which will be attended by the Governor-General Hon Sir Anand Satyanand, Prime Minister John Key, and the Prime Ministers of Tonga and Samoa.

A large screen will be erected in the cathedral courtyard for people unable to be accommodated inside.

Road closures and parking and public transport information

There will be some road closures and parking restrictions around the cathedral, which is located on the corner of Parnell Road and St Stephens Avenue.

  • Parnell Road and St Stephens Avenue will remain open.
  • Cathedral Place and part of Birdwood Crescent (from approximately #12 to #48) will be closed to accommodate VIP and mobility parking. Residents and business operators with parking on these streets will still have access.
  • There will be temporary parking restrictions on St Stephens Avenue (between Parnell Road and Brighton Road) and parking restrictions on Brighton Road (between St Stephens Avenue and Kenderdine Road).
  • There will be temporary parking restrictions for pickup/drop off point for VIPs on Parnell Road between St Stephens Avenue and Cathedral Place.
  • The bus stop on Parnell Road outside the cathedral (between St Stephens Avenue and Cathedral Place) will be temporarily closed. Buses will stop at stops further along Parnell Road.
  • People driving the elderly or the mobility-impaired can drop passengers off on Parnell Road at the entrance to the Cathedral car park and will be directed to park their vehicles on Birdwood Crescent.
  • Emergency services, residents and businesses will have access if required.
  • Wherever possible, please help us avoid traffic and parking congestion, and park away from the Cathedral and walk.
