What's on this week


Each week there is so much happening in our city - from free festivals to community markets, art exhibitions, dance, music, theatre and cultural performances, sport and leisure opportunities and more.

As well as organising more than 60 free community events and festivals each summer, we facilitate more than 2000 events in our city's public open spaces each year.

Fantastic fun to be had in Auckland

The Auckland War Memorial Museum's exhibition Encompassing Auckland is ending soon, so make sure you get along to see it. Set out in a compass form, these amazing photos cover 50 years of changes to the city's symbolic and historic landmarks. If you are a fan of photography and Auckland's history, this exhibition is definitely worth a look.

Share the atmosphere - Events and festivals

Check out the variety of books on offer - Variety the children's charity is holding their annual Monster Book Fair until Sunday, 27 July. Head to Alexandra Park Raceway with the kids to check out the massive range of books, puzzles and games for sale, as well as celebrity storytellers and much more.

Get ready to laugh - Invercargill Mayor Tim Shadbolt and well known TV personality Gary McCormick are bringing their new comedy show, A Barrel of Laughs to Auckland. Head to the Freemans Bay Community Hall on Friday, 25 July to catch this hilarious show.

Are Pacific treasures are your thing? - Head to Aotea Centre from 24 to 30 July and check out the Pacific Craft Market. With the chance to meet some of the artists, discuss their work and buy amazing handmade products, it's worth a trip to the CBD to check it out.

Discover everyday attractions - Places to go

Out of this world entertainment - Kiwi music favourites Pluto are playing a gig on Wednesday, 23 July at AUT University as part of AuSM ReOrientation Week. With an awesome sound and plenty of fans, Pluto can promise an excellent show that should be seen.

Returning to Auckland this month - After touring Europe, Cut Off Your Hands are playing a gig at the Kings Arms on Wednesday, 23 July. With a number of memorable and catchy songs and a unique sound, this is one gig you won't want to miss.  

New Zealand's favourite reggae band - Herbs Unplugged are returning to the stage for one night only on Friday, 25 July. The show is taking place on Waiheke Island and promises to be a great night of dancing and fun. Jump on the ferry and head to Waiheke for a great start to the weekend. 

Foster creativity - Arts in the city

City Art Rooms are celebrating - With their upcoming one-year anniversary,  City Art Rooms is holding a group exhibition until 9 August to take a look at the gallery's achievements to date and the achievements of the artists who have exhibited there.

Where for art thou? - The tragic love story of Romeo and Juliet is returning to the stage once again thanks to the Royal New Zealand Ballet. This dramatic and visually stunning show is on at the Aotea Centre until 27 July.

Get active - Sport and recreation
Support the boys - The Vodafone Warriors are taking on the Melbourne Storm in what should be an exciting match on home ground on Sunday, 27 July. Head along to Mt Smart Stadium for some action-packed entertainment.
Explore the great outdoors - Parks, beaches and walkways

Entertainment explosion - If you haven't been to Rangitoto recently, pack a picnic and get the family together this weekend for a slice of Auckland's great outdoors. With lots of great walking tracks to discover and views of the Hauraki Gulf that will take your breath away, jump on a ferry and discover this island which is so close to the central city.

Stuff for kids

Check out space this weekend - Head to the Stardome Observatory this weekend and check out Dawn of the Space Age in the observatory's dome-shaped theatre. Learn about space explorers, the team of Apollo 11, and robotic surveying. This exciting event is on until the end of July.

Take a ride on the wild side - If you're looking for something fun to do with the family this weekend, take a bike ride along Tamaki Drive. This is a great way to stay warm and get out of the house this winter, plus take in Auckland's beautiful harbour views.

Community facilities and groups
Super studying - Help your children get the most out of their study at the Avondale Community Library and others across the city with the Akozone homework centre. From Monday until Thursday, the friendly librarians will help them access the best information possible to assist them with their homework and projects.
