Mission Bay Winter Splash
Sunday 6 July 2008
10am
Selwyn Reserve,
Mission Bay
Congratulations to those who braved the icy waters of Mission Bay, Sunday 6
July.
Despite the morning hail and heavy rain, minutes before the splash took place
the sun came out as if it were a summers day in Auckland. Approximately 100
people turned up in hula skirts, Hawaiian
shirts, masks and coconut shells to take the plunge, with about 200 spectators watching from the beach edge.
Entertainment followed the splash with Halau hula o kahelelani no Aotearoa
with traditional and modern Hawaiian song and dance. Elvis was a hit as he
danced the way only Elvis does and sang the 'Aloha from Hawaii' concert while
handing out silk scarves.
The Orakei water sports team ran 'have a go waka paddling' while a mechanical surfboard tested surfboarding skills on
shore.
Spot prizes and prizes for best dressed were announced by More Fm and
presented by Hannah Matthews and Hannah Norton, Residents of Mission Bay and
winners of Miss Hawaiian Tropic NZ 2008.
Unfortunately the childrens activity the Big Dig was cancelled.
We would like to thank Rotary Auckland East, 91.8 More Fm,
Hot Cycles, OWS Orakei Water Sports, Fergs Kayaks, Miss Hawaiian Tropic NZ for
their participation and support of the Mission Bay Winter Splash 2008.
